Plug-in Hybrid (PHEV) cars

What is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) car?

With a hybrid vehicle, you can choose to drive purely electric, purely combustion, or an automatic combination of both. So, what does PHEV stand for? It’s simply ‘plug-in hybrid electric vehicle’ for short.

Benefits of Plug-in Hybrids

Electric mode

Choose to drive your PHEV in fully electric mode for shorter journeys, with the benefit of producing no tailpipe emissions. Or you can choose to drive using the combustion engine mode, or it will switch to this once the electric range has been used.

More efficient

They are a great option for those with shorter daily commutes within the electric mode range, or for those who simply want the flexibility to choose between electric and petrol. They can also self-charge their batteries through regenerative braking.

FAQs

Our fully electric cars are powered entirely by electricity and produce zero tailpipe emissions. They have a combustion engine and electric motor, giving you the best of both worlds. Plug-in hybrids are ideal for those looking for more range out of their battery while still offering petrol or diesel to fall back on for longer journeys.

Plug-in hybrids (TFSI e) need to be plugged into an electric charge point when stationary to top up the battery that drives the electric motor. This can be done at an electric charging station or via a domestic three-point plug.

Plug-in hybrid cars require regular servicing, just like any combustion engine car.
